Clinical Irlam punish Lee Ashcroft’s men in their first defeat of the season.

It was an uncharacteristic Town performance as they conceded on the brink of half time when Jordan Southworth was given to much time to twist and turn before firing past Lee Dovey.

Jordan Buckley added a second and Southworth completed his brace to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage just after the hour.

Goals from George Thomason and Delial Brewster looked to have changed the tide but Buckley got his second of the game, rifling home for the hosts to put the game beyond doubt.

It was ifs and maybe’s for Ashcrofts men with Paul Turner twice to be judged offside in a first half that had little chances.

Turner was Town’s vocal point but had to come off just after the hour mark and was replaced by Finlay Sinclair-Smith after taking a knock.

Buckley nearly gave the hosts the lead after an angled ball over the top saw him through on goal. His curling effort was comfortable for the Town number one.

Buckley threw himself into the game and in the and was on the receiving end of a yellow card after a late challenge on Brad Wicks. He then fired a shot down the throat of the Town shot stopper.

Just as the first half was coming to a close Irlam took the lead. Southworth was found with a beautiful angled ball and he was given too much time, cutting inside and firing home. 1-0 Irlam.

Four minutes after the restart Irlam doubled their advantage another ball over the top troubling the Town defence with Buckley profiting beating Dovey to the ball and slotting into the empty goal to make it 2-0.

Town conceded a third with Irlam taking advantage of some sloppy play. Southworth again was given to much time to dance around the defence and coolly slotted home to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Substitute Sinclair-Smith showed glimpses of what he possesses going on a fine solo run only to have his effort parried away.

It was the catalyst Town needed within five minutes the visitors pulled one back. A cross from the right caused confusion allowed Thomason to take advantage nodding home into the empty net. 3-1.

Delial Brewster added a second for Town with 15 minutes to go rifling home a thunderous effort to make it 3-2 and game on.

Town couldn’t capitalise with the wind in their sails. Conor Linigan’s quick freekick was seized upon by Buckley and his deflected efffort had Dovey scrambling.

Buckley got his rewards shortly after. An Irlam corner headed out to Buckley to complete his brace rifling the Ball into the back of the net to make it 4-2.

A well worked Town corner saw Tom Ince hit the post but it wouldn’t have been enough to get the Ridge back in the game.
