Town bowed out of the Macron Cup after a second round defeat at the MRG.

It was a disappointing day at the Mike Riding Ground as Town suffered a rare off day on home soil.

First half goals from Joe Brandon, Haydn Cooper and a second half goal from Ryan Cox were enough to knock Longridge out of the Macron Cup in the second round.

The Motormen came out of the blocks firing, with it taking only two minutes for them to go ahead.

Daniel Cross picked the ball up and put the ball into the area for Brandon to tap in on the far side.

Town had their chances but were struggling to find an end product. Ince broke forward with fifteen minutes played, switching the ball to John-Jo Morris. Morris got his shot away for it to be blocked as far as Brad Wicks who fired the ball goalwards from 30 yards only for his effort to blast wide.

Two minutes later it looked like Paul Turner had levelled up for Town as he charged forward and got one on one with Motors goalkeeper James Edgar who brought down Turner as his shot looked to be rolling across the goal-line only for Greg Drummond to clear at the last second.

Town shouted for a penalty after the incident between Turner and Edgar but the referee waved any appeals whilst Town’s prolific striker was down for treatment and subsequently carried off the pitch to be replaced by Cameron Gourley.

Vauxhall Motors doubled their lead on the 22nd minute with the scorer of the first goal Brandon threading the ball to Cooper for him to slide it past Lee Dovey.

After the interval Town had a couple of chances to get back into the game.

Alex Murphy got a shot away from the edge of the 18-yard box but Edgar saved, before Murphy crossed in a corner moments later with the ball coming within inches of the goal but no red shirts were able to tap the ball into the back of the net.

In the 66th minute, the Motormen got their third. Ryan Cox stormed forward with the Town players appealing for offside but the officials stood firm and Cox chipped the ball over Dovey to round of the day’s scoring.

Town are back in league action on Wednesday evening with Ashton Athletic visiting the MRG in a 7.45pm kick-off.
