Gutsy Longridge taste defeat at league leaders

Longridge Town fell to a two goal defeat at top of the league Wythenshawe Town despite a solid away performance.

In tough conditions against a physical side, the Ridge will feel hard done by to have not got anything from the game.

There were three changes to the side that suffered a heavy defeat to Kendal with Leighton Hewitt and Luke Smith returning, alongside a debut for Thaddeus Harp.

Disaster struck just moments after kick off as striker Matt Van Wyk pulled up after chasing a long ball.

He had to be replaced by Zach Clark.

We're all hoping it's not bad.

As for the match, it began the way as it meant to go on, with the hosts having the better chances but Town playing some nice possession based football.

Forward Tom Bentham took the first shot of the game on 8 minutes but it flew over the bar from 20 yards out.

Former Premier League midfielder George Boyd then hit a deflected shot wide.

The delivery from the corner was then nodded over by Omorogbe.

The ball was then in the net for the first time inside 12 minutes but the referee decided that Chingwaro had fouled Wilkinson in the build-up.

Town had their first shot on goal on the 20th minutes as Morgan Homson-Smith was fouled 20 yards from goal.

Morgan then hit the resulting free kick straight into the arms of the goalkeeper Hall.

Boyd then threatened again for the hosts as he curled an effort wide from just outside the area on the half hour mark.

Kitchen was then forced into his first save of the evening, as he denied Bentham from close range brilliantly.

Despite the Longridge defence holding strong, Wythy broke the deadlock before the break.

Boyd superbly picked out Chingwaro whose header wrongfooted Kitchen and landed in the far left corner.

Down but not out, Town looked to hit back almost immediately.

McLean ran onto a long ball from Homson-Smith before firing past the rushing out goalie but also past the far post.

Town were then let off again moments before the break as Bentham poked the ball into the net but the flag was raised on the far side.

There was a substitution at half time for Longridge as Scott Harries made way for Ryan Lockett.

The substitute made an instant impact as he won a corner down the left.

Homson-Smith delivered the set piece into the box. It was headed out but only as far as Luke Smith whose shot was blocked then cleared by the hosts.

Town had a nice spell of possession that ultimately ended in a goalmouth scramble after being caught by Wythenshawe.

Kitchen managed to hack it off the line before Bentham followed it in, doubling the host's lead.

Zach Clark responded with a shot over the bar from 25 yards.

Wythenshawe Town midfielder Sheridan then curled a free kick onto the top right corner of the crossbar from 25 yards out.

There was another debut for Town on 68 minutes as Leighton Hewitt and Zach Clark made way for Brett McGovern and Seb Bailey.

Defender Ryan McLean was on hand to clear an effort destined to ripple the net behind on the goal line.

McLean then provided a threat up the other end of the pitch moments later as his deflected effort was fairly comfortable to collect for Hall.

Lockett slipped in the debutant Bailey brilliantly who saw his shot turned behind.

As the game's final action, Homson-Smith released McLean down the left as the wing back's cross was almost turned in by a Wythenshawe defender.

After playing a total of 8 added on minutes, the full time whistle was blown, confirming another big three points for our table topping hosts.

Weather permitting, Longridge face another trip to Manchester on Tuesday as we look to travel to Prestwich Heys.

As for the next home match, we're next at the RLG on Tuesday 27th February to take on Pilkington.

A reminder that if you bought a Bury ticket then you can gain free entry to that fixture.

A big thank you to those who travelled to M23 to get behind the boys today.
