Cutters Pay The Penalty as Town advance

Longridge Town booked their place in the Quarter Final of the LFA Cup, after a 7-6 penalty shootout win over Daisy Hill.

Liam Atkinson opened the scoring after 12 minutes, but his side were hit back when opposing star striker Liam Sheppard scored just after the half hour mark.

This was Town's first game in 3 weeks, they created plenty of second half chances but were forced into penalties, but two shootout saves from Charlie Brier helped Town through.

There were two changes to the Town XI from that 2-2 draw against Ramsbottom at the back end of December, with Leighton Hewitt and Will Procter rejoining the side.

The first real chance of the game came through Joao Soares for the hosts, as the midfielder fired over from the edge of the box.

However it would be Town to break the deadlock not long later.

Will Procter's audacious overhead kick cannoned back off the crossbar, but Atkinson was there to send the rebound into the back of the net.

Connor High then drove into the goalkeeper's arms from distance 15 minutes later, with the sides battling to create chances.

Town stopped a Daisy Hill attack before then racing forward on the break themselves.

Atkinson found Hewitt who flashed a low effort just wide of the far post.

Despite all the Town chances, the hosts would pull level.

Sheppard connected with a diagonal ball from the right and raced into the penalty area from the left wing, before squeezing it under Brier.

Town thought they'd retaken the lead as Atkinson connected with a Jack Anderton cross to poke it past the goalkeeper.

However a Daisy Hill man was there to somehow clear it off the line.

Procter then latched onto a long ball before sending a left footed effort over the bar from an angle.

Brier then pulled off a fantastic save in a one-on-one to deny Sheppard his brace.

With a booking a side before half time, going the way of Soares and Procter, the referee called for the break.

With no chances for either side, we got back underway for the second 45.

Town immediately began piling on the pressure, with Wright heading just wide from a corner.

Anderton then saw a close range effort parried away by Jude Smith.

Town then made their first change, with Jack Arrowsmith replacing Procter.

J.Smith was then called into action again for the hosts, doing well to tip wide a free kick from Anderton.

Luke Smith then made way for Matt Van Wyk as Lee Ashcroft strengthened the attack.

Another Town corner then bounced into the path of McLean whose volleyed soared just over the top left corner.

Sheppard then fired over the bar three minutes later on the counter attack.

However Town would be the one's keeping up the pressure.

Van Wyk laid off Atkinson who saw his effort kicked away by the flailing legs of J.Smith.

Anderton then sent an inch perfect corner onto the head of Atkinson who nodded just wide.

The home side then had a good spell, Dean Singleton and Sheppard coming close.

Atkinson then made his way into the penalty area from the left before seeing his initial effort blocked.

The striker then sent the rebound wide as Town' final chance of the game.

The full time whistle then confirmed that we were off to penalties.

Brier did well to save the first spot kick from Sheppard, however Atkinson's spot kick was also saved as we began the shootout goalless.

Both sides then scored 6 consecutive penalties, with McLean, Van Wyk, Hewitt, Anderton, Arrowsmith and High finding the net for Longridge.

Brier then pulled out a cracking save after diving down to his right to give Town the advantage.

Wright stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to sent Town through to the Quarter final of the LFA Cup.

We will travel to Padiham, with the date yet to be confirmed.

A massive thank you to those who travelled over, it was great to see such a following.
