AFC make the trip from Merseyside currently sitting 2nd in the league and will themselves be looking to end the night top of the tree. Having played four league games already, Liverpool have started strongly, winning their first three before suffering defeat at home to Northwich Victoria on Saturday.
It is a great start for tonight’s opponents especially when considering key figures from their 2021/22 squad have moved on either towards the end of last campaign or over the summer. In a busy last few months for the club, the playing squad has seen the likes of Jesse Dowling (Widnes) & Callum Schorah (Chorley) move on. Between the pair they contributed 28 goals in 66 appearances in the previous campaign. In the dugout the club has also experienced a change during pre-season, as manager Chris Anderson accepted a role as assistant manager at Chorley FC. This saw assistant manager Matt Potter take the reigns on a temporary basis; however he has since been appointed permanently as of last week following the clubs successful start to the season.
One man who has remained ever present with tonight’s opponents is the aptly named Kyle Schorah who has begun the season in top form scoring 3 in his first 4 appearances, although his record is slightly tarnished by a red card in the 6-0 FA Cup defeat at Trafford. Kyle was top marksman for AFC last season, scoring 20 goals in all competitions & the tricky attacker remains a force to be reckoned with. A new face in our opponent’s side for this season, Tom Douglas is also in flying form having hit the back of the net 3 times in 4 league games, being awarded Man of The Match in the weekend loss to Northwich Victoria. He is another man that ‘The Ridge’ will be keen to keep at bay tonight in a game that promises goals with the visitors finishing last season on zero goal difference having both scored and conceded 80 league goals in their 40 fixtures, leading to a 14th place finish.
The 2021/22 campaign saw AFC Liverpool come out on top in both encounters between the sides as our early season visit to Merseyside finished in a 2-1 loss, before we fell to a 3-0 defeat at home towards the tail end of the season. On both occasions Town could not have any complaints as they were fairly beaten in poor displays which they will look to make amends for tonight.
For Town we will be looking to extend our winning start in the league to three games following single goal victories over Congleton & Winsford either side of a tight 0-1 cup defeat at the hands of West Didsbury & Chorlton. Striker Dean Ing made his competitive debut for the club at the weekend having returned from minor surgery and made the perfect start, powering home a 90th minute headed winner. Captain Matt Flynn is nearing a return in the Town backline, whilst Saturday’s super-subs J’Nai Butterfield-Steede & Courtney Skerritt will both be hoping they have done enough to earn a starting birth. Should ‘The Ridge’ manage to gain all three points tonight it will be the first time they have begun an NWCFL campaign with three straight victories, something manager Lee Ashcroft will be hoping comes to fruition to set up a positive season ahead at Town.
