Lee Ashcroft’s men progressed to the Second Round of the Buildbase FA Vase for the first time in a 4-2 win over County Durham based Crook Town.

Goals from captain Tom Ince, Danny Wilkinson, Cameron Gourley and Elliot Pond ensured Town made their way into the hat for the second round of the Vase on a surprisingly dry afternoon at the MRG.

After a washout on Wednesday night against Ashton Athletic, with the game being abandoned early in the second half, the pitch passed an early inspection on Saturday allowing the game to go ahead.

The visitors were first out of the blocks hitting the woodwork early in the first half before Paul Turner headed straight back up the other end, threading a ball through to Pond with his effort covered by Christian Holliday in the Crook Town goal.
12 minutes into the game Town were ahead.

Ince provided inspiration for his teammates as he charged forward from the middle of the park and struck the ball perfectly into the top left corner of the net from 25 yards out.

The home supporters erupted but not shocked to see such brilliance from the skipper that they witness week in week out.

An end-to-end period followed with home side heading into the break the happier going in at the interval 1-0 up.

That didn’t last for long though as the visitors levelled three minutes after the restart.

Daniel Maddison perfectly positioned to head home a bullet header that gave Lee Dovey in the Town goal no chance.

Sprung into action Town hit back through Wilkinson as he profited from a goalmouth scramble, following a corner, with Longridge keen to avoid a cup upset.

After more spells of Town pressure it was 3-1 to Ashey’s men.

Another corner providing the route to goal as Gourley rose highest to glance a header into the far corner for his first goal for the club.

With the clock ticking down and the home supporters enjoying the remaining minutes Crook appeared to signal there could be a late sting in the tail.

With three minutes to go, substitute Joey Smith was able to get one-on-one with Dovey and cooly slot the ball into the back of the net to making it 3-2 as the game headed for it’s finale.

Just one minute later, their hope was gone though, with Pond securing the win for Town, and what a hit for his first goal in the red Town shirt in front of 230 watching on at the MRG.

The ball was rolled into his path on the edge of the box, allowing him to turn and pick out the bottom corner leaving the goalkeeper wrong-footed as his left-foot strike nestled in the bottom corner.

The goal a deserved reward for his tireless effort throughout the course of the match.

The final whistle blew and signalled Town’s progression into the Second Round of the FA Vase for the first time in the Club’s history, with the draw to be made on Monday lunchtime at the FA HQ.

Six goals shared, with two new names on the scoresheet for Longridge providing a fitting showing on Non-League Day for the Ridge.

With no game next week, Town’s next fixture is away at Runcorn on 26th October with a 3pm kick-off scheduled.
