Shakers' quality proves key

The Ridge fell to a harsh defeat at the hands of in-form Bury.

Despite a battling first half, Bury found the net on five separate occasions in a crazy game where three spot kicks were awarded.

However, positives to be taken in the form of a battling display and a record attendance.

A new record attendance of 1,000 was set at Inglewhite Road.

A huge thanks to those who came down and supported the sides.

On the match, the visitors extended their unbeaten run to 20 matches, as goals from Connor Pye, Irywah Gooden, Ben Hockenhull, Brian Ly and Cameron Fogerty, condemned Longridge to a hefty loss.

Longridge made four changes from the mid-week shootout win over Holker Old Boys with Luke Smith, Leighton Hewitt, Harvey Roberts and Jack Anderton returned to the XI.

Smith got the ball rolling, only for the hosts to carve out the first chance.

Mason Walker's busy afternoon kicked off five minutes in, as he spread himself to deny Gooden as the attacker ran in on goal.

The first booking was given to Bury's Sam Couglan, who flew threw Jefferson Goncalves as the winger broke forward.

The visitors were good value for possession, but just before the 20th minute, the game took a twist.

Liam Atkinson was brought down by Lewis Earl as the forward raced into the penalty area.

The referee pointed to the spot to award Longridge their first spot kick.

Atkinson stepped up, but Bury goalkeeper Mitch Allen dived to his right to keep the spot kick out, continuing Longridge's recent penalty woes.

The hosts then started to take control as Mason Walker made a brilliant diving save to tip Brian Ly's strong free kick wide.

Gomes surged down the right just after the half hour mark and crossed into Jerome.

The forward couldn't get a solid foot on it and Town broke.

Jack Anderton made a run of his own down the right before crossing into Leighton Hewitt who just lost his footing as he went to shoot.

Bury's Pye was then booked for a cycnial foul on Anderton.

Then a moment of true bizarre-ness.

Bury came forward through Couglan, who lifted the ball over to Jerome who was promptly flagged offside.

However, with Town stopping due to the flag, Gooden took advantage and ran through.

Somehow, he struck the post with acres of time and space.

Town then survived a goalmouth scramble as Walker initially kept out the first effort, before Connor Newton had to hack off the goal-line.

Ben Hockenhull then lashed over as the ball fell into space for the third time.

Despite Town standing strong, the visitors took the lead albeit through a bit of misfortune.

Connor Pye curled a corner into the danger zone.

Walker got a fingertip to it but couldn't prevent it from finding the back of the net.

The half time whistle was blown shortly after.

At the break, we had raised a maximum of £200 that went to ticket no.6047.

An absolutely massive thank you to everyone who entered to help us raise funds for the football club.

The quality of the visitor's side saw them out in the second half.

Gooden immediately added a second for the hosts, as the attacker found himself in on goal down the right, sliding it past the advancing Walker.

Despite this, Longridge heads stayed high.

Jefferson Goncalves broke into the area before being pulled down, but managing to find Hewitt who squeezed it over the goal-line.

However, the referee had blown for a penalty seconds before.

Thankfully, the result was the same, as Luke Smith smashed the ball into the roof of the net to pull one back.

Incredibly, moments later Town had another penalty.

Goncalves was again fouled as he worked his way into the area and the ref promptly blew again.

Unfortunately this time, Smith's placed penalty was kept out by Allen, as the goalkeeper saved his second penalty of the match.

Liam Atkinson looked to grab that precious equaliser five minutes later, as he held off challenges from Hockenhull and Earl but could only fire wide from 20 yards.

Bebeto Gomes found a bit of space on the right wing again, before lofting it aerially to Ly who nodded just over.

McLean brought down a loose ball nicely but his volley flew into the arms of Allen.

Longridge made their first change on 66 minutes as Lucas Wane replaced Jack Anderton.

However, moments later and the hosts regained their two goal advantage.

Ben Hockenhull tapped in at the far post following a square ball from the right hand side of the area.

Longridge then had a good move unfortunately come to nothing, as McLean rolled it to Wane, whose cross was headed over by Goncalves.

The hosts then sealed the win, with a lovely dinked finish from Brian Ly as he raced in on goal, adding a fourth.

Longridge made their final changes to desperately try and salvage something, as Jordan Dainty, Charlie Alston, Jack Banks and Matt Van Wyk made late cameos.

With the game already won, with just two minutes left to play Cameron Fogerty landed the fifth and final blow to add the icing on the Shakers cake.

Following just three added minutes, the final whistle was blown, confirming a 20th unbeaten game for the visitors.

A disappointing result but the shift from the young lads cannot be denied.

Overall a good day for the football club and a huge thanks to everyone who came down and supported the sides.

We wish Bury the best for the rest of the season and thank the fans for being no trouble at all despite the high attendance.

We now have a week break before travelling to Glossop North End on Saturday 12th October for a 3pm kick off.
