The opening weekend of the season is finally upon us, and Town are against familiar faces for their opening NWCFL Premier Division Campaign.

Lee Ashcroft’s side head to Greater Manchester to face Avro, who were also promoted from the First Division North last season, also in their first time of asking.

Games against Avro last season were action packed. Longridge visited the Vestacare Stadium in the third game of the campaign in 2018/19 in a match which saw the home side take all three points in the final moments of the game.

Having gone behind early on, James Sloane equalised after good work from Jay Hart.

Town conceded just before half time to go in 2-1 down at the break, but a superb individual goal from Richie Allen saw them draw level with 20 minutes remaining.

Both sides then missed chances to take all three points before a free kick was awarded to the home side in the fifth minute of time added on.

From 20 yards out the ball flicked off the end of the wall, wrong footing Lee Dovey, and flew into the net.

However, the reverse fixture was a night to remember for Town fans, players and staff alike as the home side ran out 3-0 winners infront of a record 452 crowd inside the MRG.

It took 35 minutes for Longridge to break Avro down that night, after Richie Allen hit the ball hard and low into the back of the net to open his account for the evening.

With just over an hour played, Avro were down to ten after Kane Wallwork was shown a straight red for a late challenge.

With 83 minutes played Allen got his second, cutting in from the right, beating two men before shooting into the far corner.

Rio Wilson Heys drove into the penalty area and was brought down for a clear penalty with three minutes to go.

Allen stepped up and buried the ball past Latham to make it a 3-0 win for Town, securing himself a hat-trick in the process.

If that wasn’t dramatic enough, the League Title could be won by either side, and was to be decided on the final day of the season.

We all know what happened, Avro had taken over Longridge in the table and needed to merely match Town’s result on the day to secure the Title. Avro headed to AFC Liverpool, whilst Town took on Holker Old Boys at home.

It was a tense 80+ minutes in the stands, with everybody constantly checking for score updates from Merseyside.

Town comfortably won 4-1 against Holker, but it wasn’t until the dying minutes that Lee Ashcroft’s side would realise their achievements.

In Merseyside, Avro conceded a 90th minute goal, and as the news rippled throug the MRG sending everyone inside the ground into raptures as Longridge were confirmed Champions of the First Division North.

The start of the new season wipes the slate clean though, and both sides will be hoping to see similarly entertaining games between them this season.

It will be a Town team full of new and familiar faces, with Aiden Hunt, Seydou Zoumana Bamba, Daniel Birch, Keiran O'Connor and Delial Brewster all hoping to make their League debut for the club, whilst Troy Carlsey will be looking to make his second League debut after re-signing for the Club after a spell away.

The Vestacare Stadium has a fully licensed club house and snack bar.
