Town pay a visit to Little Wembley to face Nelson this weekend.

Nelson were first formed in 1881, after a group of locals were inspired to form a team after watching a Blackburn v Burnley match, but it wasn’t until 1889/90 that they competed in a league, and joined the Lancashire Combination League in its first year.

In 1898/99 the club disbanded, though reformed and were accepted into the North East Lancashire League just a few months later.

The 1922/23 season saw Nelson promoted to Division Two, and they took an overseas tour in May 1923 which saw them win 4-2 against Real Madrid.

Though only in Divison Two for one season, they beat Leeds United at home and their first away win came against Manchester United.

Nowadays, Nelson sit 17th in the Hallmark Security NWCFL First Divison North, having won three, drawn three, and lost seven.

The East Lancashire side will also be hoping to record their first home win in the league this season.

Town come into the game sitting top of the table, extending the gap at the summit to five points after a magnificent display at second placed Carlisle City in the week, with Town running out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Richie Allen and Tom Ince.

Town boss Lee Ashcroft says he is looking forward to the trip to face the East Lancashire Side and hopes his side can keep up their form.

“We had a great night in Carlisle on Tuesday and I’m hoping for more of the same this weekend.

“It’s important we keep our feet on the ground. The players are showing the right mentality and we’re playing our football the way we want to play, so touch wood we carry on the way we are going.”
